She Was Once a Girl

Conversations between God and His daughters.

BUTTERFLY CRY

~This song was written for a dear friend of mine who struggled with drug addiction.  She's been sober for awhile now, and is such a testimony to God's grace.  It's a picture of the journey towards healing no matter where we've been. May we all continue towards healing.~

Another day of weeping another year flies by
And butterflies cry
Wondering why we’re so troubled so worn down in this blessed life
And still so unhappy with all the knowledge we claim will make us wise

And they look at her and think she’s so beautiful full of life
And she looks at them and wishes she fly

So all your choices of yesterday have been made
So give up your hold of them as if they should decide your fate
Cause no one knows what the future holds
So be who you are my butterfly be beautiful with your second chance soul

And they look at her and think she’s so beautiful full life
And she looks at them and wishes she could fly
Away from a life she sees as tragedy from her tear stained eyes
So for her tonight the butterflies cry

GIRL ON A SWING

~Written for another friend of mine, this song is a conversation between God and one of his daughters, about how He desperately wants her to find life in Him.~

Try to tell her she’s beautiful she smiles so sweet
But deep down she’s been dying for a chance to believe
In more than these scars covered by a busy life
In more than this broken heart bleeds out tears in the night
And she hears

I’ve come to know the pain you swallow
Been here since you began everytime you called I ran to your side

Believes she can swing through life from her backyard
As the waves push her to shore calling forth a brand new start
Will you gasp when it seems that no air exists, or will you find your rest in his promises
And she hears

So anytime you wonder if I’m around just be still and listen
Listen to the sound of this song to you, as I long for you
This songs to you as I long for you

SMALL TOWN

~This is a song about a girl from a small town, who was never told that she was beautiful or that she was a princess.  The years that were formative in building her up in all that she is, were instead spent tearing her down.  It's a promise from God that if you give your life to Him, He will grow the most beautiful garden inside of you where it was said that nothing could grow.~

Small town silence whispers in my ear
Tells me her story earning her this tear
The tale of a princess who never got her crown
And the close destruction that tore her beauty down

But the years destroyed by famine of your hungry heart
Will be given back with interest in all the things you are
And as you walk towards beauty that hides behind your scars
I can see the good life growing in front of where you are

She finds the tears come easy behind her wooden door
Holding onto the remnant of safety from all the pain she’s worn
So I sing for her royal graces to put a smile upon those lips
Cause you’ll find in those tender places is the love      I will I will I will to live

On Her Arm

~There has been a huge problem with people hurting themselves.  They call it a release of pain,  what they deserve or they just find a comfort in it.  This song begins with Jesus speaking to the Devil and ends with Jesus speaking to you.  This is a tough reality we live in.  I pray God's grace and love upon you if you find this a part of your battle.~

You’ve lied to my princess
You’ve lied to my bride
Convinced her that beauty cannot live inside
and she has tried to cover
her shame from my eyes
the scars on her arms
she bleeds through the night

she says it feels much better
to release the pain when she’s under the weather
but these are all lies

so I’ll tell you princess
yes I’ll tell you bride
vanity is skin deep
but beauty’s inside
so in me find healing
for the deepest of scars
just look in my eyes
I’m not that far

I say it feels much better
To hold you in my arms when you’re under the weather
Oh my truth is alive

There’s scars on your arms
Scars on your heart
You wonder if love will always feel so far
But I have been waiting for you to see
These scars on my hands
Scars on my feet
Will you come to me

Your Lullabye

~This song is from a real life story of loss.  It's  a heartbreaking story, one that without the hope of Christ is utterly hopeless.  This song is also a conversation between us and God.  It's our heart in the midst of the valley, and His response. It's no surprise that heartache is apart of every woman's journey through life, May this song draw you in the midst of your heartache to the heart of Jesus.~

Is it my mistake that brought me to this day
Cause the rains come down all day and I am soaked the whole way through
Cause I remember truth and the way that love could move
But lies can be convincing when one breaks into two

I’ll sing your lullabye
Your needs in these hands of mine
So my child come sleep tight
I’ll be your harbor tonight

Though the waves may knock me down
I know that you’re my solid ground
So I will stand for you my only hope
And when my legs aren’t able to please carry me   home

I’ll sing your lullabye
Your needs in these hands of mine
So my child come sleep tight
I’ll be your harbor tonight
Go on now close your eyes
Feel my arms wrap around
And I will sing all night
So you can hear the sound
Of your lullabye

By Love

~This is the story of the woman caught in adultery.  Jesus, approached with this situation gives the answer to the accusers that only those without sin may judge humankind. It's her story, yours, and mine.  We are all sinners, all in bondage, and Jesus stoops down and picks up our chin and whispers love into the depths of our souls.~

What do you say, when I am found guilty
With rocks in their hands and a reason to stone me
But love drawn in sand sends judgement fleeing
One look in Your eyes is my first time seeing
Love love love, love
Love love love love

Go and sin no more is what I was commanded
But I caught myself redhanded
With none in the courts but me and deception
You draw once again that lovely inscription
Of love love love love
Love love love love

SHE KNOWS

~Andrea was a girl in a bible study I was a part of. Every week she had something else that had gone wrong in her life or with her family.  But she never lost her smile.  After a while of hearing tragedy after tragedy she'd been through,  I asked her how she could possibly keep going on.  She looked at me and said, "I know He was there with me through it all."

She walks to the ledge, looks down below
She’s been here so many times, wanting to let go
But something pulls her back, away from harm
She can’t see Him, but she feels His arms

And she knows that he was there
She knows her tears were shared
She knows that he still cares
She knows that he’s always near

Dark and gloomy life, is what anyone would see
From trial to pain, mixed with pure humanity
But all she sees is this, hope in you
She’s had to test it so much, she knows it must be true

TRAGEDY OF LOVE

~This song is about how we all feel at times.  When we get overwhelmed by our feelings of worthlessness,  in the midst of our own demise, God runs to us.  The chorus and second verse are God's response to us in this place.  Listen, He's speaking to you.~

I can’t see what you see in me
Or what you say you made me to be
I write on my mirror words I can relate worthless failure, ugly hate
My hands are tied by perceptions view
I am no longer beautiful for you
So why don’t you just go spend your time
On someone without these mistakes of mine

So this is our epic tragedy of love
With death fear and failures enough
You go up with the worlds view around
Constantly forgetting that my love surrounds

And I cannot sit back and watch you drown yourself in all those tears
So I am running I’m almost there to sweep you up away from here
And I have loved you for all your life still beside you through joy and strife
And had I again to make you new I wouldn’t change a thing I love you

Will you ever rest in me rest in my promise in my peace
Cause I gave my life to show you my love
To show you how you look from heaven above

Cocoon

~This is one of my favorite songs because of the picture it paints.  We get so comfortable in the life we're in, and when something comes along no matter how horrific or blessed we shutter and try to hold it back, because we hate what we can't control, what we can't see, and what's different than we know.  But, there is no beauty in staying the same.  The Father is constantly calling us to deeper places of belief and faith in Him and deeper places of love and freedom.  So, the question is for all of us is how do we look at the situations of change?  Do we see them as the opportunity for beauty to spring forth, or do we do everything we can to hold onto our so called stability in order to maintain our comfort?  Out of the cocoon is the only way to change into a butterfly. Will you fly?~

I hear it’s time to break out of this cocoon
Come morning light my existence alters to fears I never knew
And though I’d love to stay the same
You say there’s beauty I would never know outside of the change

So spread your wings and fly away from what you thought you knew of me
Over the treetops breath in new life where my sunlight is glistening
Cause life does alter and we will change it’s the way it’s supposed to be
But never forget my love will stay please just follow me

So could I find another to replace you
I fear my heart would slay me before you get the chance to
Cause when it’s first and foremost lies and doubts are broken with your truth
And in this everchanging life I live I ask for nothing   but to be with you.

THE NIGHT IS FADING

~Picture an old time Jewish wedding.  It's a celebration where everyone lets loose and joy flows like a river.  They are truly celebrating the union of 2 people. This is the backdrop of this song.  Then picture Jesus standing at the alter waiting for us to walk down the aisle to Him.  He's overwhelmed with excitement, for the day has finally arrived.  He's declaring His unending love and holding out his arms.  It's an invitation to see that Someone cares so deeply for us and can't wait to be with us. This is love.~

And how could I make this known to her ears
I can promise a love that waits beyond 7 years
And will only grow with the time of pain and tears
My sweetest love though far I’m always near

Make ready all who wait
To see the groom will not delay
He stands with tears on mercies alter
If you bend your ear you can hear him sing to her

My love I’m waiting for you
My love come home
The night is fading
And you’re never alone

Infatuations far from how I hold you in my heart
I’m filled with passion for you and a stubborn love that won’t depart
And I know there’s days you fear I’m not around
So come to the chapel and hear the wedding bells and the joyous sound
And how could I make this known to her ears
I can promise a love that waits beyond 7 years
And will only grow with the time of pain and tears
My sweetest love though far I’m always near

Make ready all who wait
To see the groom will not delay
He stands with tears on mercies alter
If you bend your ear you can hear him sing to her

My love I’m waiting for you
My love come home
The night is fading
And you’re never alone

BEAUTIFUL

~I was in Iowa a few years ago and met with a young adults group one evening.  There was a common theme going around the room with all of the girls.  It was an inability to see themselves the way that God saw them.  Lies of being ugly or unattractive to anyone were tearing them apart from the inside out.  I went to bed that night very troubled by this, knowing this issue wasn't just here in Iowa with this group.  God woke me up early the next morning and asked me to write this song from Him to them.  It came out quickly, and I knew then that it would be a touch of healing to this broken area in women.  Our society has focused on the exact opposite of what God says is beautiful, and even worse, we as men have bought into it just as much.  Women are torn between wanting to be cherished and treasured and wanting to be accepted in this world's eyes.  It is quite possibly the worst attack on the heart of our sisters.  This song speaks of how God sees each one of you, His treasures, his beautiful daughters.  Men, let us cherish women the way our Father does, and women, resist the lies.  You are beautiful.~

There you are amidst death and magazines
Hiding away those precious princess dreams
Of love embraced with passions hold on you
Of beauty and life someday restored to truth

You’ve heard those words all too many days
You’ve felt this feeling keeping you away
And all I want is to sit and gaze
Into those eyes that I have made

Just listen and you’ll hear me say

You take my breath away
Come dance with me in this place
I’ve been waiting for you to see
That you mean more than life to me

And if there’s anything thing I could say
To help you know that I feel this way
Close your eyes take my hand and feel my pain
As you

You take my breath away
Come dance with me in this place
I’ve been waiting for you to see
That you mean more than life to me
